A study in Sweden brought up some interesting questions about folic acid. In this study almost 400 9th graders were given varying levels of folic acid to be taken throughout the year and their grades in 10 core classes were added up at the end of the year. Those who took higher levels of folic acid consistently scored higher. Now, this shouldn’t make you run out and load up your kids with folic acid because there could be many other factors that contributed to these results and foods in Sweden were not fortified with folic acid at the time of the study as they are in North America. Still, some researchers found these results to be significant. Folic acid is found in green, leafy vegetables and legumes like lentils and beans. It’s important in red blood cell formation and in the development of the early spinal cord in a fetus. Children age 9-13 should get at least 300 mcg of folic acid daily, 400 mcg for ages 14 and up, and 600 mcg daily for pregnant women.
